How it works
This planner simply adds the amounts you enter for each applicable category. The starting numbers are suggestions for planning only; replace them with your own quotes, deposits, and travel plans.
The contingency amount is suggested once when the page loads. It does not automatically change when other fields change, so it will never overwrite a number you chose.
Methodology and sources
Reviewed August 28, 2026. Scope: general U.S. moving-budget planning. Prices, deposits, and fees vary by provider, property, state, and locality.
- The default 2-bedroom packing amount is $210. Home-size packing suggestions come from this site’s Packing Supplies Calculator, which documents its box-count, quantity, and editable-price method.
- Movers or truck rental, move-in costs, travel, and temporary storage start at $0 because those amounts should come from your own quotes and agreements. For interstate moves, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s estimating guidance explains the written estimates movers must provide.
- The $150 utility amount is an editable planning placeholder, not a national average. The initial $36 contingency is exactly 10% of the other nonzero starting suggestions; it stays fixed until you edit it.
- Move-in costs have no national default here. Confirm lease charges and applicable local rules; the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s housing-counseling resources can help renters find local guidance.
