How it works

Box counts start with a home-size planning model. Light packers use fewer boxes, while heavy packers use more. Tape and paper are based on the total number of boxes.

Selecting fragile items adds bubble wrap. Edit each price to turn this list into a more useful local packing-supplies budget.

Methodology and sources

Reviewed August 28, 2026. Scope: general U.S. household packing planning. Household contents and retail prices vary, so counts and prices are starting points.

  • The default 2-bedroom, average-volume model starts with 20 small, 18 medium, 10 large, and 3 wardrobe boxes. Other home sizes use proportionally smaller or larger internal base counts; light and heavy selections scale those counts. These are planning heuristics, not national averages.
  • Quantity formulas round up to one tape roll per 10 boxes, one paper bundle per 15 boxes, and—when fragile items are selected—one bubble-wrap roll per 20 boxes.
  • Starting prices are $1.5 small, $2 medium, $3 large, $10 wardrobe, $4 tape, $15 paper, and $12 bubble wrap. They are editable placeholders, not a live price survey.
  • The U-Haul Moving Supplies Calculator is a named industry reference showing that box and supply recommendations depend on move details; it is not the source of this tool’s exact counts or prices.
